Gain by Losing

gain by losingThus, one gains by losing,
and loses by gaining.

                                                 – Lao Tzu Tao Te Ching 42

A challenge of life is making choices.

To buy a jacket, you have to part with money you meant for a book.  To lose a job, you set youself free to embark on a journey you could not have found time for ……

Making choices in life is difficult.  It is, nevertheless, better than not making one at all.

The trick is to appreciate what you lose for the things you gain, and what you gain for the things you lose.

This will help you to see serenity in life.

This is the essense of ‘yingyang balance’.

yin yang balance in the tai chi symbol

For those who are new to the Chinese cultureas, they may find the yin and yang symbol, as shown on the left, intimidating.

It is, in fact, a symbol that illustrates a simple state of existence – yin-yang balance.  It can be used to describe all existence, from natural phenomena, social order, to functions of our body.

It is also known as the symbol of ‘Tai Chi’ — the Chinese word that literally means ‘ultimate potentiality’.

The symbol is in the shape of a circle and consists of two colors. The black color represents the yin energy, and the white color represents the yang. They are opposing qualities of dualism.

In the circle, there are two fish-like features. The black fish is yin, and the white fish is yang.

There is a black dot that looks like an eye of the white fish. Similarly, there is a white dot as if an eye of the black fish. Walking through the diameter of the circle, you will not experience pure black or pure white. There is always some black and some white.

This means that yin and yang are rooted in one another. You find yin in yang, and yang in yin. This is, in fact, a reality of life. In life, you hardly find a situation which is pure yin or pure yang. There are seeds of sadness in happiness; and opportunities in every risk.

Yin and yang wax and wane; and can be mutually transformed.

Note that the yin-yang symbol is rounded. This gives a sense of continual movement and interaction of the two energies. Although opposing, they are complementary and interchangeable. Yin can turn into yang and yang turns into yin, causing a new state of yin-yang relationship to establish.

Seeing black in white

A person who knows Tao has a clear mind.

This is because he is able to accept contradiction and paradox in life, and see black in white.

He knows that existence itself is a paradox.

If there is no day, there is no night.  If no one is tall, no one can be short.  If there is no honor, there can be no evil.

Instead of expecting things to be always in his favor, he is able to see life in a stage of flux, and strike a balance in it.

He seeks a balance in yin and yang.

Know the white,
yet keep to the black:
Be the pattern of the world.
Be the pattern of the world,
the virtue in you will endure
and return again to the infinity.

The best time to be sound asleep in a day is between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Based on the traditional Chinese beliefs, this is the time when the earth is asleep. Following the rhythm of the Nature will make your sleep deeper and more effective.

Unfortunately, many of us are unable to be asleep during these hours.

There are two major reasons that deprive you from sleeping during these hours. First, you find it difficult to fall asleep, even if you want to. Second, you postpone the sleep for other reasons. It could be that you’d have to rush a report, or simply to stay on for your Internet chats. It could also due to health reasons, such as muscle pains.

If you find it difficult to be asleep, one thing you may do is to observe the pattern of the day to plan your activities. While there are four seasons in a year, the same rhythm can be found in a day. The autumn of a day begins at 3 p.m., and ends at 9 p.m.. Beginning from 9 p.m., it is the winter, and it should be the time that you’re getting ready for your slumber.

For those who have problems falling asleep by 11 p.m., you may want to review what you do during the autumn of the day; i.e. from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Since it is the autumn, it is the time for harvest. If you do something fluttering during these hours, you may find it difficult to lower the chi of yang, thereby allowing the chi of yin to take over and lead you to a sound sleep during the winter of the day.

If you do not sleep by 11 p.m. because you choose not to, it could be that you are unaware of the importance of living in tandem with the rhythm of the Nature. Unless you can’t do it due to reasons beyond your control, for your health sake, it is worth the while to review the ways you plan your daily activities.

A secret weapon behind top achievers is the ‘energy field‘ they work in.

What is the ‘energy field’  that we are talking about?

In the context of Tao, it is described as yin-yang energy.  Do not bother about the terminology if you don’t really understand what it is.  Just feel it. There is an energy field within ourselves.  There is an energy field between ourselves and the things that we interact with.  At the same time, there is an energy field in the universe.

The high achievers knows how to make the energy field work in their favor.  Wittingly or unwittingly.

Try it.

When you meet a person, first smile at her, and then, turn your face sulky.  Take a pause to see how the chemistry between yourself and the person change.  This is how an energy field works.  You will be able to tell the difference in the change of the energy in this case.  It begins positive, then turns negative.  Decide on which of the two manners that works best for you , and use it in your favor — on your way to greater achievement.

In Lao Tze, it is said that:

The Tao gave birth to One.
The One gave birth to Two.
The Two gave birth to Three.
The Three gave birth to all of creation.

All things carry Yin
yet embrace Yang.
They blend their life breaths
in order to produce harmony.  (Chapter 42)

A secret weapon behind people of high achievement is that they do not just work hard.  Working hard alone does not lead to exceptional performance.

In addition to working hard, they work on the magnetic field in which they work.

One way to do this is to see your work as if it’s your romantic partner.  See it as if it is someone that you have dearly fallen in love with.

We all know the power of romantic love.  If you have not experienced it yourself, you probably would have learned about it from novels and movies like Romeo and Juliet. Romantic love is powerful.   You are willing to die for someone you are truly in love with.

The moment that you can see your work as something you truly love, the magnetic field in which you work in changes.  You no longer get frustrated easily for not being able to see immediate results.  Obstacles become something that strengthens rather than taking your enthusiasm away.

This alone will lead you to exceptional performance.

From the perspective of Tao, the phenomenon is seen as the working of yin and yang.

As Laozi says,

All things carry Yin yet embrace Yang.   They blend their life, breath in order to produce harmony. (Lao Tze Chapter 42)
